>The highway was built in the 1960s as an alternative to the railway that spanned from Vancouver to Squamish. Construction took several years to complete and involved six main stages:

 

  • blasting and drilling to remove rock from the highway’s route
  • clearing and excavating the route
  • moving earth to create a level path
  • compacting and stabilizing soil to prepare for paving
  • installing drainage and sewer systems
  • paving the highway
