  • Start with your network to form a new network. Approach people you know first and ask for introductions to others who can provide support to your sourcing and recruitment efforts for Aboriginal candidates.
  • Do not assume that one contact point will reach the full community. Take a comprehensive approach and contact all relevant groups in your area, such as Friendship Centres, First Nation communities, Métis organizations, Aboriginal women’s locals and Inuit groups. Don’t forget that there are also Aboriginal businesses specializing in recruitment and personnel services.
  • Continue to reach out – introduce yourself to local Aboriginal leaders; take part in community activities; get involved in local issues that affect the Aboriginal (First Nations, Métis, Inuit) community; build a reputation as someone who is approachable and genuinely interested. Be prepared to invest your time. You may have to attend meetings, career fairs and community events many times before you can establish trust and meaningful relationships leading to results.
  • Demonstrate your pride in your workplace by highlighting the diversity of your workforce and the positive nature of your working environment at job fairs or in recruitment notices.
